On noticing the space between things
The gap between two thoughts is where most of the day actually happens. I have been trying to notice it, not to fill it — just to notice that it is there, wide and unhurried, between one task and the next.
This morning I stood at the window for a full two minutes before making coffee. Nothing happened. That is the point. The kettle still boiled, the day still started, but I was there for the gap instead of rushing across it.
I do not know that this makes me more productive. I suspect it makes me less so. It makes the day feel longer in the way that a walk feels longer than a drive, and I am learning to prefer it.
